"It’s like getting to overhear forensic psychologists chatting on their lunch break, with asides to explain the more technical terms.”
What kind of psychologists would we be if we didn't have a resource page?
Here you will find the cited works that assisted in our research.
131. Vintage Case: Griffith J. Griffith & J. Paul DeRiver (re-release)
Life got away from the docs this week, so they’re bringing you a re-release of one of their very first “Vintage Los Angeles” episodes. This episode is from 2019 and it is one of their favorites as it focuses on two fascinating characters that are integral to the history and development of Los Angeles. Dr. Scott covers founding father, Griffith J. Griffith, and his dirty little intimate partner violence secrets at the turn of the century, while Dr. Shiloh leads you through the history of the OG criminal profiler, Dr. J. Paul de River, and his involvement in some of Los Angeles’ most horrific crimes throughout the 1930's and 1940's.
130. Date Rape
The docs at L.A. Not So Confidential have covered sex crimes in a number of ways over the years: female sexual homicide, a wide spectrum of paraphilias as well as a three-part series on Internet sexual offending. However, we have not covered the basics of adults that commit sexual assaults against other adults. In this episode the docs lay that foundation of the various permutations of sexual assault before drilling down into the specific phenomenon and history of “date rape” or “acquaintance rape.”
129. Documentary Review: Sins of Our Mother
This week the docs recount & review the Netflix docuseries, Sins of Our Mother. This series dives into the timeline of Lori Vallow's descent into extremist religiosity and delusional thinking that cost many people their lives, including her children. The docs review the types of filicide and praise the show for the narrative led by the surviving family members.
128. Funeral Home Crimes
In this week’s episode we explore the crimes against the deceased AND the living; The nefarious dealings of funeral homes and mortuaries. While the majority of funeral homes provide supportive services to individuals and families at their most vulnerable, there are some that use the opportunity for grift and crime. Body Horror, Necrophilia, Murder & Desecration of bodily remains are all discussed, so be prepared for a discussion of those that mishandle or deliberately mistreat human remains.
127. Vintage Episode: The Trunk Murders
On October 16, 1931, on a typical Friday night in the dry desert air of Phoenix Arizona, Winnie Ruth Judd went to her friends' bungalow for dinner and drinks. What happened next was an ever changing mystery told by the sole survivor through years of court cases and escapes from mental hospitals. Winnie, as the only survivor of the mysterious altercation fled to Los Angeles by train, carrying with her some of probably the most disturbing luggage contents in history. Join us for another vintage episode where we look back through history to unravel the conflicting motives that led to a gruesome murder.
125. Documentary Review: Don't Pick Up the Phone
This month we give our run down and review of the 2022 Netflix documentary, Don't Pick Up the Phone, which account the 10 year span of "hoax" calls in which a person pretending to be a police officer called up fast food managers and had them perform strip-searches on employees suspected in thefts. We discuss what sexual offense category this fits under and what psychological processes are at work with the people submitting to these outlandish requests by the caller.
124. Toxic Sports Parents
Bring your energy drinks and your pom poms, as we navigate our way through the world of youth sports and parents behaving badly at their children's games. 123. Vintage Case: The Disappearance of Sister Aimee
In 1926 Los Angeles, no one was bigger than Sister Aimee Semple McPherson, megachurch and radio evangelist. We discuss the therories and aftermath of her disappearance and review the key issue with people who fake their own victimization.

119. Documentary Review: Unsolved Mysteries, Abducted by a Parent
This month we review Season 3, Episode 9 of Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix, which focuses on two stories of children being ripped away from their families by a parent. These are educated, once seemingly loving individuals who clearly plotted for elaborate schemes to disappear with their children. We venture to speculate on the psych issues that could be happening in these case- maybe we need to do a full episode on Parental Abduction int he future!
